The Power of Presence

Why Wellness and Positive Coping Matters

Young people are dealing with a lot of stress—every day. Things like not having enough money, hassles with school, family issues, and even our closest relationships, can completely stress us out.

So how do we deal with challenges and setbacks and keep getting on with our lives?

Everyone has the capacity to become more resilient, able to overcome serious challenges and come out stronger on the other side, not broken by the experience. Positive and thriving coping strategies are a key building block of the way to bounce back.

Learn more about them below!

Demonstrate the Power of Presence

Your presence can be the best present someone could ever receive. People struggling with stress, depression, loneliness or being bullied don’t always need all the answers, but they do need someone who is in their corner. You don’t have to be a mental health expert. You just have to care!

Here are some ways you can “be a present.”

  • Just Being There to Show Concern and Listen without Judgment
  • Your Voice: Check In, Ask “What’s Up” or “How’re You Doing?” Then Listen! Sometimes, You Even Have to Double Check
  • Show Support and Encouragement by Hanging Out, Doing Something Fun Together

Other Levels to “Be Present”

If you are a young person who wants to take your “presence” to the next level, the Be Present Online Toolkit provides even more tips and strategies for addressing the stressors and traumas that put young people at risk. Create and customize activities to reflect the needs and interests of different schools, genders, sexual identities or communities. Be a part of an online community of youth who care deeply about mental wellness and are willing to take action in their schools neighborhoods and hometowns to affect positive change.
