Qualities of a Supportive Friend 

Not all friendships are created equal, and it’s important to recognize the traits that make someone a genuinely supportive and affirming friend for LGBTQ+ individuals. Here are some green flags to look for:

  • Acceptance and Respect: a supportive friend accepts you for who you are without trying to change you. They respect your gender identity and sexual orientation, using your chosen name and pronouns.

  • Empathy and Understanding: empathy is the ability to understand and share the feelings of another. Supportive friends listen to your experiences and feelings without judgment and offer comfort and validation.

  • Reliability and Trust: good friends are dependable and trustworthy. They keep your confidences, respect your privacy, and are there for you when you need them.

  • Open-Mindedness: a supportive friend is open-minded and willing to learn about LGBTQ+ issues. They educate themselves and are open to having honest conversations about your experiences and challenges.

  • Advocacy: true allies stand up against discrimination and prejudice. A supportive friend advocates for your rights and inclusion, both in personal interactions and broader social settings.

How to Find Supportive People 

Finding supportive and affirming friends can sometimes be challenging, but there are many ways to connect with like-minded individuals who will value and uplift you. 

  • Join LGBTQ+ Groups: many communities have LGBTQ+ organizations, youth groups, and social clubs. These groups are great places to meet people who share similar experiences and values.

  • Participate in Online Communities: the internet offers numerous platforms where you can connect with other LGBTQ+ youth. Social media groups, forums, and chat rooms can provide a sense of community and support, especially if you’re in an area without many local resources.

  • Get Involved in School or University Organizations: many schools and universities have LGBTQ+ student organizations or clubs. These groups provide a safe space to meet supportive peers and engage in activities that promote inclusion and understanding.

  • Attend LGBTQ+ Events: pride parades, LGBTQ+ film festivals, and other community events are excellent opportunities to meet supportive people. These events celebrate diversity and inclusion, bringing together people who are passionate about LGBTQ+ rights.

  • Seek Allies in Your Existing Circles: sometimes, supportive friends are closer than you think. Look for people in your current social circles who display qualities of acceptance and understanding. They might be more willing to support you than you realize.
