Spring is here and temperatures are warming up! Spring weather brings new activities, vacations, and fresh air. We tend to focus a lot on self-care in the winter when the days are cold and gloomy, but it is just as important to take care of yourself as the weather warms up and your schedule gets busy. Here are some ways you can make your self-care a priority during the spring season!
Do Some Spring Cleaning
Studies show that cleaning your space is a great way to help you turn down visual noise. By decluttering your environment, you are able to focus more on the things that you need to do. Getting rid of things you don’t need can be very helpful to your mental health. Here are some ideas for ways to declutter your space:
- Out with the old. Go through your closet and donate clothes that you don’t wear anymore. It will feel good to give yourself extra space and give your clothes a second life in someone else’s closet. A great rule of thumb is if you haven’t worn it in the past year, donate it!
- Declutter any desks and drawers. Recycling old assignments and notebooks frees up space to create something new. Test out those pens, if they don’t work anymore, you don't need them in your space.
- Get your feng shui on! When your mind and environment are at peace, you have feng shui which creates the most optimal environment for you to be creative and productive. Pick a room you are in most and try rearranging your furniture.
- Open a window. Getting some of the musty winter air out can breathe new life into your home.
Get Out in Nature
The days are getting longer and the weather is getting nicer. As the plants and trees come back to life, now is a perfect time to get outside.
- Go for a walk around your local park or even your neighborhood. Getting some exercise and fresh air can help you feel calm and centered. Don’t forget your sunscreen!
- Jump in some puddles! Even the rainy spring days are a good opportunity to get outside. Splashing in the rain can be some wholesome and messy fun that makes you feel like a little kid again.
- Grow something. Whether you can plant an entire garden in your back yard or only have space for a small planter in your window getting your hands dirty and helping something new to grow can be a soothing and rewarding form of self-care.
Take Time to Rest
In the winter, curling up under a cozy blanket and resting all day seems to come naturally. When springtime hits, we’re ready to go go go with new activities, vacations, and getting out in the nicer weather. Make sure you are making rest a priority. Here are some ideas for adding rest into your busy spring:
- Schedule in some downtime. Make an appointment with yourself and add a rest break into your planner or calendar app to remind yourself to take a break. After all, you don’t want to skip out on a meeting with yourself!
- Add rest into whatever activities you are already doing. Going for a walk in the park? Take time to sit on a bench and listen to the wind and animals. Gardening in the backyard? Take a break with a cool drink and let the sun warm you up. You can add moments of rest to your day to help keep yourself balanced.
- Try meditation to help keep yourself centered. New to meditation? Check out this Beginner’s Guide to Mindful Meditation!
